Quick answer: Downloading a stock item from Envato Elements now creates a commercial license automatically. You do not have to name or register a project first.
The important rule is still one license for one project or end product. If you use the same item in a second project, create another license for that use while your subscription is active.

I pay for Envato Elements and use it for websites and video work. My simple habit is to keep the license certificate with the project files. Envato's labels and Workspaces can make that easier, but labeling is optional.
Envato changed the way licenses are created and organized, so some older tutorials are now out of date. This is my practical summary of the current rules. Envato's full license terms are the final authority, so check them if your project has unusual legal, resale, broadcast, or distribution requirements.

The one-project rule
Envato's stock-item license is project-based. One download creates a license for one complete project or end product. That project can appear in several places. One finished client video can be delivered on a website, YouTube, and social media without becoming three projects just because it appears on three platforms.
A different client video, campaign, website, or end product is a new project. If you want to use the same music track, template, photo, or graphic again, create a new license for that second use.
Project names and labels are optional
Older Envato instructions often told users to register every download to a named project. That is no longer required. Every download is licensed automatically. You can still add a client or project name from My Downloads, the item page, or a Workspace if it helps you stay organized.
Labeling a license does not create the commercial rights; the download already did that. Think of labels as bookkeeping.
Reusing an Envato item
You can reuse an item, but each separate project needs its own license. You do not need to download the file again. While your subscription is active, open My Downloads or the item page and create another license for the new project.
If I use one After Effects template for two unrelated client videos, I create two licenses. If I distribute one finished video on a website, YouTube, and social media, I do not create a new license just because the platform changes.
Using Envato Elements for client work
Envato allows stock items in paid client projects. The safe version is to deliver a completed, customized end product—not the original asset as a loose file that the client can extract and reuse.
Envato says you may transfer the completed end product to a client with a limited sublicense for the included item. Your subscription must be active when you transfer it, the item must not be extracted or used separately by the client, and the client needs to understand the restrictions. If the asset itself is the main value of what you are selling, or the customer can customize it through an on-demand service, stop and read the full terms before proceeding.
What the license does not allow
The practical boundary is that you are licensing an item to help create something larger—not buying the item itself. Envato does not allow you to redistribute or resell the original asset, offer it as a source file, or make it available for someone else to extract and reuse.
- Do not sell an Envato item on its own or with only superficial changes.
- Do not use an item where the item itself is the main value of the product.
- Do not put Envato assets into an on-demand service where customers customize the result.
- Do not pass fonts, add-ons, templates, or source assets to a client for unrelated reuse.
- Check the music-specific terms before broadcast, theatrical, or standalone audio use.
There are edge cases, especially around merchandise, logos, apps, and music. For those, use the current full terms instead of treating this page as a substitute.
What happens after cancellation
A project completed while your subscription was active stays licensed after the subscription ends. You can continue to publish, distribute, and use that completed end product.
What you cannot do is use downloaded items in a new or unfinished project after cancellation. Downloading a folder of assets before canceling does not reserve them for future jobs. Finish the real project while the subscription is active.
Fonts and add-ons are different
Fonts and add-ons are installation-based instead of project-based. Envato's current full terms allow installation on up to two computers per subscription seat at one time. They cannot be transferred to another person, including a colleague or client.
Installation and use require an active subscription. Rights to completed work remain in place after cancellation, but you cannot start new work with those tools after the subscription ends.
Unlimited downloads, Fair Use, and AI tools
Creative stock downloads can be unlimited, but they are still subject to Envato's Fair Use Policy. Do not use bots, scripts, a shared Individual account or login, bulk scraping, or downloads meant only to stockpile assets for later use.
Envato's AI generators are a separate category. AI outputs use separate AI Tools Terms, and generation limits depend on the subscription plan. Do not assume that “unlimited stock downloads” also means unlimited AI generations. Check the current plan limit and AI terms before using generated material in a commercial project.
My practical licensing checklist
- Download the item while the subscription is active.
- Decide what the specific project or end product is.
- Create another license when the same item moves into a different project.
- Add a project label if it helps, but do not mistake labeling for license activation.
- Save the certificate with the project files and client paperwork.
- Complete client work and transfer the end product while the subscription is active.
- Check special rules for music, fonts, add-ons, AI outputs, resale, and on-demand products.
